1 Hike through Rocky Mountain landscapes

With so much wilderness at their disposal, Canadians love to get out into nature. With more than 1,200 kilometres of maintained trails winding through Jasper National Park, you'll find everything from gentle lakeside walks and family-friendly forest trails to alpine adventures with panoramic views of glaciers, turquoise lakes, and rugged mountain peaks.

Go with a local hiking guide, who can bring the landscape to life by sharing stories about the park's wildlife, geology, and wildflowers. Hiking with a guide is also a great way to discover lesser-known trails while gaining confidence in mountain safety.

If you're planning to hike independently, always check the latest Parks Canada trail conditions before heading out.

2 Paddle a Voyageur-style canoe across a quiet lake

The serene calm of a glacier-fed lake. The easy dip of a paddle through water. Once a crucial method of transportation through Canada's water-rich territory, canoeing is now mostly a way to relax. It's essentially meditation in motion.

On Pyramid Lake, Wild Current Outfitters’ Signature Guided Canoe Experience takes guests out in a handcrafted Voyageur-style canoe for a relaxed, scenic adventure surrounded by mountain views. This guided paddling experience is especially good for families, couples, and small groups who want the atmosphere of a wilderness outing without needing advanced canoe skills. Keep watch for loons, osprey, beavers, muskrats, elk, and deer along the shoreline.

Prefer to explore at your own pace? Canoe rentals (also kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards) are available at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge on Lac Beauvert, and Pyramid Lake Lodge.

3 Explore the iconic Athabasca Glacier

Few places capture the imagination quite like the Athabasca Glacier. Flowing from the vast Columbia Icefield—which feeds water toward all three of Canada's oceans—this ancient river of ice has been slowly carving the Canadian Rockies for thousands of years. Today, it remains one of the most accessible glaciers in North America, offering visitors the rare opportunity to get up close to living, moving ice.

For a truly unforgettable experience, skip the crowds and join Rockaboo Mountain Adventures' Tread Lightly Glacier Hike. This small-group guided adventure takes you beyond the viewpoint and onto the glacier itself, where ACMG-certified guides share fascinating insights into glacier science, climate, and the powerful natural forces that continue to shape this remarkable landscape. Along the way, you'll explore ice formations, learn about glacier ecology, and experience the icefield with a strong focus on sustainability and stewardship.

If you'd rather keep your feet on solid rock, Rockaboo also offers guided rock climbing experiences.

4 See wildlife like moose, bears, and elk in their natural habitat

Jasper National Park is one of the best places in the country, if not the continent, to see wild animals roaming freely. Home to elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bears, grizzly bears, moose, wolves, coyotes, and countless bird species, Jasper offers incredible opportunities to observe wildlife in its natural habitat—always from a safe and respectful distance.

While wildlife sightings can happen almost anywhere in the park, joining a guided tour greatly increases your chances of spotting animals while learning about their behaviour, habitat, and the delicate ecosystem they call home. Local experts know where wildlife is most active throughout the day and can share fascinating insights into everything from elk migrations to bear ecology.

Remember that these are wild animals—not attractions. Always stay at least 30 metres away from elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and other large herbivores, and at least 100 metres away from bears, wolves, coyotes, and cougars. By giving wildlife plenty of space, you'll help keep both animals and visitors safe while preserving this unforgettable Canadian experience for generations to come.

5 Experience Indigenous culture

Long before Jasper National Park became one of Canada's most beloved mountain destinations, these lands were places of gathering and trade for Indigenous Peoples. One of the most meaningful ways to connect with the land today is by experiencing it through an Indigenous perspective, which can deepen your understanding of the people, history, and traditions that continue to shape Jasper today.

A memorable place to begin is Warrior Women's Fireside Chat, led by Knowledge Keeper, musician, and storyteller Matricia Bauer. Gather around the fire for an intimate experience filled with conversation, drumming, singing, and storytelling. Explore their full range of Indigenous cultural experiences, including plant walks, workshops, and performances.

6 Reel in your dinner with a guided fishing trip

With its seemingly endless number of lakes, Jasper National Park is in some ways Canada in miniature (the country boasts roughly 2 million lakes, aka almost 15% of the world's lakes).

Fish like rainbow trout, brook trout, northern pike, and mountain whitefish swim through Jasper, and with Jasper Park Fishing's Catch & Cook adventure you can enjoy your haul in that night's dinner. Their experienced guides provide all the equipment and instruction needed, making it easy for anglers of every skill level to experience one of Canada's favourite outdoor pastimes.

Currie's Guiding also offers private half-day and full-day fly fishing trips on iconic lakes like Maligne Lake, as well as other lakes and rivers throughout the park.

Note: Parks Canada has updated information on fishing regulations and aquatic invasive species prevention measures here.

7 Fuel up with comfort food and Canadian craft beer

Poutine, game meats, and anything maple. The cuisine in Jasper is varied and delicious, with everything from wilderness smokehouses to charming cafes to mountaintop restaurants.

Comfort food is a cornerstone of Canadian culture, especially after a day spent hiking, paddling, or exploring the mountains. While every region has its own specialties, hearty portions, locally sourced ingredients, and warm hospitality are staples from coast to coast. Jasper's restaurants put a Rocky Mountain spin on these Canadian classics, celebrating Alberta beef, wild game, fresh trout, seasonal produce, and house-made desserts.

Pair with a pint at Jasper Brewing Co., Canada's first national park brewery, where you'll find award-winning beers brewed with pure Rocky Mountain water alongside elevated pub favourites.

8 Cabins

Whether you're roasting marshmallows, sipping coffee on a cabin porch, or unzipping your tent to a view of towering peaks, staying close to nature is part of what makes a Canadian Rockies vacation so memorable.

Quintessentially Canadian and oh-so-cozy, Jasper’s love for cabin living is inextricably entwined with the national park’s history and is continually evolving via modern accommodations.

Jasper offers accommodations for every style of outdoor enthusiast. Sleep among the trees in a cozy cabin at Pine Bungalows, wake up in town with Bear Hill Lodge, or enjoy the secluded charm of Patricia Lake Bungalows. Looking for something truly unique? Spend the night at Shovel Pass Lodge, a remote backcountry cabin accessible only by horseback or hike, where unplugging comes naturally.

If camping is more your style, Jasper National Park is home to some of Canada's most spectacular campgrounds, from fully serviced sites to secluded wilderness campgrounds.

Whether you prefer the comforts of a cabin or the simplicity of sleeping under canvas, few experiences capture the spirit of Canada quite like spending a night immersed in the wilderness.

9 Stargaze in a dark sky preserve

As one of the world's largest accessible Dark Sky Preserves, Jasper offers remarkably clear night skies with minimal light pollution, creating incredible opportunities to see the Milky Way, constellations, meteor showers, and, on occasion, the northern lights.

For an unforgettable introduction to the night sky, visit the Jasper Planetarium. Begin your evening with an immersive dome theatre presentation before heading outside for a guided telescope experience led by knowledgeable astronomy interpreters. Or try a night photography tour or guided stargazing.

If you're visiting in October, don't miss the Jasper Dark Sky Festival, when the community comes alive with renowned speakers, stargazing events, live music, culinary experiences, and family-friendly activities celebrating Jasper's extraordinary night skies.

10 Go on a scenic road trip or ride the rails with a train tour

There's something unmistakably Canadian about a great road trip. With endless mountain highways and breathtaking viewpoints around every bend, Jasper is the perfect starting point for an unforgettable drive through the Canadian Rockies.

Whether you're cruising the world-famous Icefields Parkway or exploring Jasper's scenic roads, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.

If you'd rather leave the navigation to someone else, climb aboard SunDog Tour Co.'s Train Tour. This one-of-a-kind experience lets you travel one direction aboard VIA Rail while returning by comfortable coach, combining spectacular rail travel with guided sightseeing through the Canadian Rockies. Along the way, your guide shares stories about the region's history, wildlife, and landscapes while stopping at scenic viewpoints that most travellers would otherwise miss.

Whether you're behind the wheel or watching the mountains roll past from a train window, travelling through Jasper is a reminder that in Canada, sometimes the journey really is the destination.
