I became passionate about outdoor climbing in Jasper three years ago. I was amazed how different it was from the indoor gyms I was used to, but the potent combination of real rock faces, panoramic mountain views, and the sound of clinking gear finally conspired to make me understand the appeal.

It made me fall even deeper in love with the sport.

Since then, I’ve come to appreciate why climbing tours (like the one I did with Rockaboo Mountain Adventures) are so popular and hope more people take part in them. Rockaboo's 4-hour guided experience helps people of all skill levels ascend Jasper's limestone playground.

My rock climbing tour with Rockaboo Mountain Adventures

The day started at the Rockaboo office, where my friendly rock guide, Harry, kitted me out with the helmet, shoes and harness that will keep me safe and comfortable. Approachable and smiley, he explained the plan, I signed the waiver, and together we hit the road in the Rockaboo van. Our drive time: 17 minutes (plus 2 minutes to allow some big horned sheep to cross the highway). Our destination: Morro Slabs.

This popular climbing spot is surrounded by rugged peaks, with the turquoise Athabasca River flowing just beneath. It is absurdly gorgeous, and only a five-minute hike from the parking lot. Harry and I chatted along the way. I learned that the Athabasca is the longest river in Alberta (1,538 kilometres) and that it flows all the way to the Arctic Ocean. I learned he needs a haircut so he stops overheating while climbing.

On arrival, we re-checked our gear and found our way along a dusty path to a sloped ledge overlooking several jagged, 19-metre-tall rockfaces. Morro Slabs consists of many bolted routes perfect for beginners and acts as an ideal environment for introductory or family climbing. This wall is a haven for simple climbing in a controlled environment, with perfect handholds and foot-sized ledges. As someone who transitioned from indoor to outdoor climbing in Jasper, I highly recommend Morro Slabs for all ages and abilities.

After readying ourselves to climb, Harry attached me to the rope and explained that I would be rappelling down progressively steeper cliffs while he called instructions from above. This would let me become comfortable descending a wall, as opposed to climbing up and feeling too nervous to come back down. A backup rope ensured Harry could take over if I needed assistance. Leaning back to descend can be nerve-wracking but learning how to rappel yourself helps to understand how the gear works. Reframing fear and pushing past your comfort zone is part of the fun!

Once grounded on the lower ledge, it was time to climb back up. Focusing on my body movements, I moved up the smooth and naturally chalky rock. From below, Harry's supportive voice pointed out round handholds and pockets: a recipe for enjoyable climbing. At the top, I spent my time taking in the view.

Throughout the tour I could choose from different routes varying in difficulty, allowing me to personalize my experience, rest and test boundaries. Harry also demonstrated how to use the belay device and tie knots for future climbing excursions.

This tour runs from May 1st to September 30th and requires no experience. I was once a beginner and still feel nervous when I’m roped up, but now I thoroughly enjoy climbing and immersing myself in the Canadian Rockies.

If you decide to challenge yourself to a new experience and push out of your comfort zone, spending a day with the inspiring guides at Rockaboo Mountain Adventures will show you what you're capable of.
