Why Jasper is still worth visiting in rainy weather
Before we dive into the details of the best things to do in Jasper when it's raining, it's important to check our mindset. Many people see rain in the forecast and curse their luck, but there's plenty of positives to this weather too! Granted I, the author of this guide, have a soft spot for rainy days. Maybe it's my soggy British heritage or my tendency to burn in just 15 minutes of sun, but I think there's a special charm in rainy days.
- Wildlife activity: Jasper's furriest residents are already more active in spring, but bears in particular love the refreshing and soft vegetation that comes with rainier conditions.
- Moodier scenery: The mountain landscape comes alive when magical wreaths of cloud drift in and out of the peaks. Some of my most dramatic photographs have been taken on rainy days.
- Cozy vibes: Feel like being inside? Well here's your perfect excuse to cuddle up fireside with a book.
- Fewer crowds: Had your eye on that popular hike? Now is the perfect time to do it and have the place to yourself.
- Adventure potential: Call it type 2 fun, call it character development, but in my experience some of the most lasting memories are made in inclement weather. Popping out for a hike but it's sprinkling? Suddenly you're hardcore. Going out for a walk with the family? Kids love jumping in puddles.
Weather is always changeable in the mountains, and your wardrobe should reflect that variability no matter what the forecast is saying. That means layers, including a waterproof outer layer. Have glasses? A ball-cap keeps drops off your face. Waterproof footwear can be nice, but note they can sometimes feel hot when the sun inevitably comes out.

7 Wildlife tour
Inside bus/Outside · Year-round
Great for: couples, families, groups, nature-lovers
Of all the seasons, spring is generally accepted as being the wettest. But in Jasper it's also one of the best times to see wildlife. Rainy weather can actually make wildlife viewing in Jasper even more rewarding. Cooler temperatures, quieter trails, and lush dewy vegetation often encourage animals to become more active throughout the day. With mist drifting through the mountains and fewer vehicles on the roads, a rainy-day wildlife tour offers a uniquely atmospheric way to experience Jasper National Park.
Guided wildlife viewing tours take the stress out of spotting animals by pairing visitors with knowledgeable local guides who know where wildlife is most commonly seen and how to observe them safely and respectfully. Along the way, you’ll learn about Jasper’s ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the fascinating behaviours of the animals that call the Rockies home. It’s a relaxing, memorable activity that proves a little rain can lead to some of Jasper’s most magical moments. Note that depending on severity of weather though, some animals may seek shelter in the trees and be harder to spot.
Most Jasper wildlife tours run from spring through to fall, however SunDog Tour Co. runs year-round wildlife viewing tours.
