Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before This October With Helmsman of the Starship Enterprise

Jasper, Canada (June 27, 2016) –

Actor, social justice activist and social media powerhouse, George Takei will be taking command of audiences in Jasper – Canada’s base of adventure – this October at the 2016 Jasper Dark Sky Festival presented by Rocky Mountaineer.

Running October 14th - 23rd, this year’s Jasper Dark Sky Festival will feature George Takei on the night of Friday October 21st.

Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, Takei is also recognized world-wide as a leader in social justice, LGBTQ rights and marriage equality. With nearly 10 million likes on Facebook, 1.81 million followers on Twitter and an increasingly popular YouTube channel, Takei’s strong social media presence allows him to advocate for the causes he cares about, and keeps him connected to the digital generation. Along with his heavy cyberspace involvement, Takei is also an accomplished author and Broadway actor.

Coming into its 6th year, the Jasper Dark Sky Festival was originally created to celebrate the Dark Sky Preserve designation that Jasper received in 2011 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Since that time, the festival has grown into a celebration throughout the entire Dark Sky month, highlighting two featured weekends packed with events, speakers and activities that promote science, space and conservation.

Other notable speakers appearing in the festival’s line up this year include: scientist Bill Nye and Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Nye, known for his educational program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy”, will be presenting two shows: one on Friday, October 14th and another on Saturday, October 15th. Jeremy Hansen, who currently provides the voice between the ground and the International Space Station at NASA’s Mission Control, will be presenting on Saturday, October 15th at Centennial Field.

Other events taking place during the festival include SPACEtalks, “Symphony Under the Stars” with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the annual “Beyond the Stars” stargazing event at Lake Annette, a public astronomy event held by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and the Big Bang Expo Presented by TELUS World of Science Edmonton. Continue to check back as many other events and speakers will be announced over the coming months!
