Jasper is an amazing place to explore as a family. As a local couple with three young kids in tow, Katrina Turcot and Brian Nicolle would know.
Turcot grew up in Jasper, spent years guiding trips down the Athabasca River, and now owns Jasper Raft Tours with her husband. With a business to run and a family to raise, they're very familiar with the joys and complexities of getting outside with little ones. But despite the extra prep time that can goes hand in hand with young exploration, Turcot says it's always worth it. Here, she shares a sample of her perfect summer day in Jasper. From family-friendly hikes in scenic spots to splashing through some easy rapids, to roasted marshmallows on the beach, these recommendations are perfect for any person who's travelling with a brood.

Hiking
From the town of Jasper, Mount Edith Cavell is one of the most prominent and identifiable peaks you can see. While impressive from a distance, it's easy and oh-so-worth it to get up close and personal with this impressive mountain. A forty minute drive (from downtown) and one kilometre walk (along paved trail; 2km round trip) are all that separate you from stunning views of Mt. Edith Cavell's north face, including the Angel Glacier that hangs off it and the minty-green pond that sits beneath catching ice chunks. Bring snacks and extra warm layers to enjoy on the benches at the turnaround point, or, if your kids are a bit older then continue further along the Cavell Meadows Trail*. This longer hike guides you toward even higher viewpoints and spectacular wildflowers.
Note: the Meadows trail may be closed later into the summer due to lingering snow at these higher altitudes.

Rafting the Athabasca River
Before they bought the company, both Katrina and Brian spent years working as guides for Jasper Raft Tours. Their tours travel along the calmer sections of the Athabasca, which is a designated Canadian heritage river, so they're very comfortable taking the kids on the large, stable rafts. The kids love passing through the many small sets of rapids and calm stretches, while the guides point out the natural and human history of Jasper.
The specially designed, 7 meter (25 foot) long, oar-powered rafts, offer a safe and comfortable ride that are great for almost all ages, from toddlers to seniors. The guides do all the rowing; you sit back and enjoy while exploring all the spectacular scenery. Don't forget to look along the riverbanks, where rafters will often spot various wildlife including elk, deer, moose, coyotes, wolves, eagles, ospreys, mountain sheep and bears. Tours operate rain or shine, and a poncho will be provided when required.

Roasting marshmallows
You don't have to be camping in Jasper in order to enjoy a fireside dinner. At multiple beachside picnic spots, there are firepits available that are perfect for roasting marshmallows, hot dogs, and more. Katrina and Brian try to get up for an evening lakeside dinner at Pyramid Beach as often as possible with the kids, and are always sure to bring tons of food, bathing suits, and lots of wet wipes doesn't hurt either for when tiny hands get sticky.
