BirdBelly is the new artistic moniker of Métis singer-songwriter Cynthia Hamar, marking a bold next step in her evolution from raw folk-pop beginnings to a more cinematic, Americana-driven sound. After studying recording and production at MacEwan University—where she earned a Bachelor of Music with distinction—Hamar released Joint & Marrow, an internationally praised album that earned her a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination. With BirdBelly, she collaborates closely with producer Paul Johnston, bassist and mentor MJ Dandeneau, and others to expand her musical palette with elements of jazz, country, gospel, and blues.
Her debut BirdBelly album, The Wind The Wood, reflects themes of faith, resilience, family, and connection to land. Songs like “Where The Two Rivers Meet,” “Fortify,” “Shirt Pocket,” and the lead single “Black Horses” highlight her deepening lyrical maturity and spiritual storytelling. Ultimately, BirdBelly represents Hamar’s commitment to creating music that matters—work that inspires, connects, and invites listeners into rich emotional landscapes.
