LGBTQ ACTIVIST GEORGE TAKEI to TAKE THE STAGE AT DARK SKY FESTIVAL
Venturing Beyond TV Drama to Advocate Real Change
Jasper, Canada (September 16, 2016) -
Amidst various notable speakers at the 6th annual Jasper Dark Sky Festival Presented by Rocky Mountaineer - including Bill Nye, Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, Phil Plait and more - stands actor and LGBTQ activist George Takei.
While best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series (now celebrating its 50th anniversary), Takei is much more than an actor with a role in one of the most popular science fiction franchises in history. He is able to approach multiple generations and interest groups as he advocates for causes such as social justice, LGBTQ rights and marriage equality – all matters in which he has been globally recognized as an advocacy leader.
Takei uses his earned celebrity status, epic sense of humour and boundless compassion while fully embracing the world of social media to reach expansive audiences. With nearly 10 million Facebook likes, 1.81 million followers on Twitter and over 40,500 YouTube subscribers, his vast social media presence is a driving force for distributing his messages to even those outside of the general Star Trek following.
Originally created to celebrate the Dark Sky Preserve designation awarded to Jasper in 2011 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, the Jasper Dark Sky Festival has since evolved into a month-long celebration of science, space and conservation. Throughout the years it has hosted speakers, activities and events to capture the attention and inspire visitors and guests.
Running October 14th-23rd, this year’s festival reaches for the stars, both astronomically and socially as support flourishes for George Takei and his advocacy messages.
Enjoy Takei’s only engagement in Alberta for the rest of 2016 on Friday, October 21st. Use promo code “STAR50” to receive a 10% discount to see George Takei as part of the Star Package. Included in this exclusive package is admission to SPACEtalks: an engaging panel featuring Phil Plait, the NADA’s Mohawk guy Bobak Ferdowski and more.
