Q & A with Kaleigh Wallace, Raft Guide for Jasper Rafting Adventures

Working as a professional raft guide in the largest National Park in the Canadian Rockies definitely has its perks. For Kaleigh Wallace, guiding allows her to spend the summer months rushing down rivers, navigating currents and showcasing the spectacular beauty of the park to visitors from all over the world.

What makes rafting in Jasper different than rafting anywhere else?

River wise, it’s glacially fed, so it’s pretty cold which is unique. A lot of people in the world haven’t felt (or played in) water this cold. The people that come are from all over the place too, and everyone is here to experience the mountains, so that’s pretty awesome!

What’s your favourite part about being a raft guide?

My favourite thing is getting to go out on the river every day and getting a workout while I work outside. Also, just meeting people from everywhere is sweet.

How long have you been a raft guide?

This is my fourth summer here in Jasper. I learned here, trained on the Athabasca river and then my second year I moved up to the Sunwapta

What’s your favourite river to raft on?

The Sunwapta. This is the highest level that our company does and it’s a blast!

A lot of us go on the [surrounding] rivers and play around in our free time. Most of us raft all day long and then raft or kayak in the afternoon too.

Why do you think visitors of Jasper should give rafting a try?

It’s just an awesome experience being in the glacial water. It’s a fun thing to do, especially when it’s a rainy day and they’re struggling to find activities. With rafting, you’re going to get wet no matter what. If it’s kind of a miserable day, come rafting. If it’s sunny, come rafting!
