Guest Post by Chris Tse: Jasper Half Marathon Training

At Blitz Conditioning Edmonton we help people of any and every fitness level crush their goals on a daily basis. Be it a group HIIT workout, spin class, or personal training – we’re there rooting for you! But your training at Blitz extends much farther than you think. In fact, we help people train for races all the time. Incorporating other methods of working out is just as important as your runs are when training for a race.

Jasper is now hosting its second official half marathon! Imagine running your legs out on some of the most epic trails with the mountains as the backdrop, and breathing in the freshest air. Jasper is the base of many adventures and I’m happy to report that on April 8, 2017, I‘ll be venturing beyond to participate in one of Canada’s most scenic races.

Imagine running your legs out on some of the most epic trails with the mountains as the backdrop, and breathing in the freshest air.

As a personal trainer and outdoor enthusiast at Blitz Conditioning, I thought I’d share a condensed race training program to follow. In this program you don’t need to be running six days a week: as a matter of fact, rest and cross-training are as important as running itself!

Don’t worry - with nine weeks until go-time, it’s still entirely possible to train to complete the half - whether you’re just starting to run, or you’re a seasoned runner looking to conquer a personal best. The great news about the race is that there’s not a lot of elevation change throughout the course; which may surprise you considering it’s in the Rockies after all! This isn’t to say it won’t be challenging, but you can rest assured that you won’t be scaling any mountains.

This beginner’s program is great for someone who can already comfortably run two to three kilometers. There are novice and advanced programs available from Runner’s World that are great for those who can already comfortably run between four and seven kilometers, or 12 kilometers respectively. Note that active rest days can include strength training, swimming, cycling, walking, or any combination of these!

Now all that’s left to do is check out the training program below, lace up those running shoes, and hit the trails. We’ll see you in Jasper!
