Dark Sky Weekend 2 Itinerary

Jasper Dark Sky Festival presented by Rocky Mountaineer Weekend 2 is full of amazing free events and inspiring keynotes... and we've got all the fun packed into a 2 day itinerary!


Day 1 - Friday, October 21st


4:30 - 5:00pm- Get your Bearings

Take a leisurely stroll through Jasper on your way to the first event! See if you can find the adorable Jasper the Bear statue as you go.


5:00 (gates open) - 7:30pm - An Evening with George Takei

Centennial Field | $70


Where no Story has Gone Before…

Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, George Takei is also recognized world-wide as a leader in social justice, LGBTQ rights and marriage equality. Join Takei as he discusses his role as an advocate, actor and social media powerhouse. Buy tickets→

 

7:30 - 9:00pm - Dinner at Evil Dave’s

622 Patricia St

Enjoy an amazing dinner at one of Jasper’s best restaurants. Anything you try at Evil Dave's is sure to be a hit, but we recommend the El Diablo for the fall. The spicy flavours are sure to get rid of any chill in your bones. View menu→

 

Between 8:00pm - 11pm - Beyond the Stars

Lake Annette | Free!

Power down. Look up.

Join us along the shores of Lake Annette for one of the most memorable star gazing experiences in the World. Offering people of all ages a variety of free, intimate and interactive programming with TELUS World of Science–Edmonton, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada-Edmonton Centre, Dark Sky Photographers, Parks Canada Interpreters and other special guests.

Lake Annette Shuttle

Shuttles run from 7:30PM until 10:45PM

From Centennial Field: 7:30PM, every 15 minutes

From Sawridge: 7:35PM, every 15 minutes

Return shuttles: 8:00PM to 11:30PM, every 15 minutes

Parking is extremely limited. Shuttles provide event goers with the best access to the event.

Day 2 - Saturday, October 22

 

8am - Rise and Shine

Up and at ‘em! There’s a whole day of adventures waiting!

 

8:30am - 9:30am - Breakfast at Athabasca Hotel

O'Shea's Restaurant at the Athabasca Hotel is famous for their eggs benedict, but they’ve got all the breakfast classics on lock. Fill up for the busy day ahead! View menu→

 

9:30am - 10:30am - Get Wild

Head out of town for a quick wildlife viewing adventure.

Just outside of town, you’re likely to see some amazing wildlife including bighorn sheep and elk. If you’ve got some time, go for a quick drive and see what you can spot! 11am - 3pm - Big Bang Expo.

Centennial Field | Free!

Head back into town for the Big Bang Expo! Explore various areas of science with hands-on demonstrations, experiments and table top displays that explore the nature of light, optics, projectiles, cool chemistry, brain teasers, and other science topics with staff from Jasper Dark Sky Festival’s signature sponsor the TELUS World of Science - Edmonton.

 

4:30 - 5:30 - Dinner at the Brew Pub

Enjoy a casual early dinner at Jasper Brewing Company! It might be a nice night for a beer and appetizers meal. Jasper the Bear Ale is a local favourite and pairs nicely with any of the delicious comfort food on the menu. View menu→

 

6pm - 7:30pm - SPACEtalks

Join us for two hours of entertaining space talks and debate from some of North America’s brightest astronomy and media professionals, starring: President & CEO of TELUS World of Science - Edmonton Alan Nursall, science journalist Nadia Drake, Ross Lockwood and NASA’s Bobak Ferdowsi. Buy tickets to George Takei→

 

8pm - See the Stars

You’re probably feeling pretty inspired by the night sky after that keynote event… so attend a stargazing event of your choosing:

 

8:00pm - Saturday Star Sessions

Jasper SkyTram | BOOK IT from $79 

Blast off with astronomy experts from The Jasper Planetarium for an exclusive dining and stargazing experience atop the Jasper SkyTram. Your SkyTram flight will take you nearly 1 km closer to the stars above, to the SkyTram Upper Station, where you'll have the chance to look through the most powerful telescopes in the Canadian Rockies, under the darkest skies in the Rockies.  Buy tickets→


8- 10pm - Stargazing in Jasper

Visitor Information Centre Lawn | Free

Join astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Edmonton Centre for a free stargazing night in Jasper. Chat with a professional astronomer and view celestial delights through powerful telescopes.

 

10:30 pm - Aurora and Stargazing

Maligne Canyon | BOOK IT for $79 ($29 for kids)

Join space author and astronomy magazine columnist Peter McMahon and the Jasper Planetarium's experienced astronomy guides for a hands-on tour of planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and much, much more. Look through the biggest telescope in the Rockies from one of the most beautiful destinations in Jasper Dark Sky Preserve and even get the chance to see live, full-colour video of distant objects in deep space. Buy tickets→
